A longtime fly fisher, Bruce opening Mayfly & Company so that avid fly fishers from the Boston area wouldn't have to drive out to Concord or Pepperell for gear.
Bruce first learned about fly fishing from a childhood friend, Skip Mills. At eighteen years old, Skip told Bruce, "A am going teach you something that will stick with you the rest of your life."
They spent many whole days standing in the Ken Lockwood Gorge River in New Jersey, poles in hand. Bruce quickly fell in love with the sport. "It's the peace, the tranquility," says Bruce. "Time seems to stop. Six hours of fly fishing goes by like two. It's addictive."
Hoping to introduce fly-fishing to the next generation, Bruce, who is now over fifty, teaches free introductory classesto children from ages eight to fifteen. "I want to pass on what Skip did for me. Kids need an alternative to soccer and computers."
Children have come into the store wide-eyed, looking at the colorful natural materials on the walls and life-like flies in small boxes. "Are these real?" they ask their parents. They are fascinated.
Bruce worked twenty-two years in the restaurant business and was featured in the New York Times for his food, Subsequently he started a business restoring old homes. "Once I turned fifty, I said to myself, you can do this or you can wish you can do it." And so Mayfly & Company was hatched.
Bruce has filled the store with equipment and materials of extraordinary quality, much of it unique to Mayfly & Company.
